ANABOLIC STEROIDS
AND PROHORMONES

Anabolic-androgenic steroids are synthetically procured pharmacological substances used for exogenous interference with the body’s internal excretion processes. These substances can be used in pharmacology and are the main type of therapy used by the branch of medicine known as endocrinology. Anabolic-androgenic steroids are also used to boost the achievements of healthy athletes, but their used is prohibited in competitive sports. We often hear of cases where anabolic-androgenic steroids have been added to legal supplements by fraudulent supplement manufacturers, as an attempt to “improve” the effectiveness of their products. Such practices are recognized as a criminal act, as the ingredients of such supplements have been falsely described. In most countries anabolic-androgenic steroids are considered prescription-only medication (in Asia they are available over-the-counter). The USA currently has the most restrictions concerning the sale of steroids. Here federal law includes steroids on its list of dangerous substances, subject to regulations (group III – substances potentially addictive psychologically and partially addictive physically). Since 2004 the US definition of an anabolic steroid is as follows:

“The term ‘anabolic steroid’ means any drug or hormonal substance, chemically and pharmacologically related to testosterone (other than estrogens, progestins, corticosteroids and dehydroepiandrosterone).”
